Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast has long been known for its world-class Sailfish, Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado (Mahi-Mahi) Sportfishing. We catch and release hundreds of billfish each year!! . Our prime fishing season is December- May. But we catch fish year-round because the Gulf of Nicoya is a magnet for many different species of baitfish. December May is also dry season, so the seas are generally calm when the fishing is best. Our waters abound with whales, dolphins, turtles, manta rays, and many other species of marine life throughout the year.
MarlinOctober is normally the top month for marlin in this area, but action is also good in September and November and occasional blues and even blacks can be found any time of the year, although they are usually out farther than boats hunting for sailfish are likely to be fishing. SailfishMiddle of December to the end of April - when they begin moving north - is rated the best season, but the big schools often move in about October and occasionally stay longer. A few sails always show among the catch from June through September, mixed with the other species that are found inshore during these months. TunaFound throughout the year as they are all along the Pacific coast, but most abundant from about June through September. Most are the eight to 12 pounders, but a dozen or more over 200 pounds and maybe another two dozen in the 100 to 200 pound range are taken every year. Wahoo Not common in the area around Quepos, but more abundant in the late summer farther south, especially the Drake Bay area from late June to early August. Dorado: Dorado, also known as Mahi Mahi or Dolphin fish. Dorado are most abundant between the months of December through October when the rivers send floating logs and other debris to the ocean. These fish are attracted to drifting debris and are commonly found swimming around underneath. Dorado is a species here in Costa Rica that can also be caught year round. Roosterfish: Undoubtedly, the Roosterfish is the most exciting inshore fish available and are the main attraction to inshore fishermen. These fish lurk around rocky bottoms and are one heck of a fight! They are not to good for eating due to of all their muscle but they do tend to bring a lot of spunk to the line. Roosters can be caught year round averaging from 20 to 40 pounds. Cubera Snapper Fishing: This is the most popular of all the local Snappers, due to its size and sheer strength. Fish over 50lbs have been caught in the area, year round. They are very similar to the Red Snapper fish.
